Single Use Plastic (SUP) legislation

The European Single Use Plastic Directive (SUP Directive) has been in force since July 3, 2021. From 5 January 2023, producers will be responsible for the costs of cleaning up, transporting and processing packaging with a plastic component that fall under this directive and end up in litter. The purpose of the SUP legislation

The main aim of the SUP directive is to reduce the damage to the environment caused by disposable plastics such as balloons, meal packs, drink packs, straws and cutlery. The directive contains various measures to reduce the share of single-use plastic in litter and in the sea, for example the so-called "plastic soup". These measures are aimed at plastic products and packaging that are most common on European beaches.

The amount of the total compensation for all products and packaging that fall under the SUP legislation will be determined for the first time in June 2024 by the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management for the year 2023. From 2023, the individual contribution per producer or importer for SUP packaging levied by the Packaging Waste Fund (see rate table). 

Specific measures have been drawn up to discourage the use of disposable drinking cups and some rigid food packaging. From 2022, the implementation of these reduction measures will be monitored via the Packaging Waste Fund to measure their effect.
